Cycling Canada, in collaboration with Cycling BC and the Burnaby Velodrome Club, will host this weekend the 2014 Canadian Junior and U17 Track Cycling Championships, starting on Friday.

Canadian Cyclist is onsite to provide continuous coverage, including photos and interviews.

Close to 80 young track cyclists will compete for 24 Canadian champion titles in the U17 (ages 15 and 16) and Junior (ages 17 and 18) classes.

Titles will be awarded in all the Olympic disciplines: Omnium, Sprint, Keirin, Team Pursuit and Team Sprint.

"We are very impressed with the high number of young participants attending the event - one of the highest numbers we've seen in track cycling at this age level," said Mathieu Boucher, Cycling Canada's Director of Performance Development and Technical Delegate of the event. "This is a clear testament to the commitment to track cycling from our provincial cycling associations, in alignment with Cycling Canada's high performance commitment. This event will serve for many as a springboard to the elite category and international competition. It is considered a critical step in Cycling's Long Term Athlete Development model."

With the new Pan Am / Parapan Am Games Velodrome currently under construction in Milton, Ontario, as well as Canadian success on the international scene, interest for track cycling has grown significantly in recent years, and is expected to continue to grow in the future.

The Canadian Junior and U17 Track Cycling Championships start Friday afternoon and end on Sunday evening.

The event will take place at the Burnaby Velodrome in British Columbia. The Burnaby Velodrome is inside the Harry Jerome Sports Centre on the north side of Burnaby Mountain, about 20 minutes east of downtown Vancouver, BC. The track is 200 metres long, 6 metres wide with 47-degree banking in the corners and 15-degree banking on the straightaways.
