Tour de France
Stage 16 - Courchevel to Morzine 196 km
A hard final day in the Alps. Marco Pantani attacked hard on the first major climb 68 kilometres into the stage and, with Fernando Escartin and Pascal Herve, managed to get a maximum gap of 1:15 before they were caught by a vastly reduced peloton containing Armstrong, his two lieutenants Livingston and Hamilton, Ullrich, Botero, Beloki, Virenque and other top contenders with approximately 45 kilometres to go.
When the group reached the slopes of the final climb to the finish - the Col de Joux-Plane - Pantani was one of the first to lose contact! The front group was gradually whittled down to 8, and Armstrong began to run into difficulties, eventually being dropped by Ullrich and Virenque. Virenque then attacked Ullrich and caught Roberto Heras, who had been solo in front on the climb. Heras and Virenque rode together on the descent, until Virenque dropped Heras with less than 2 kilometres to go and soloed in for a well received French victory. Ullrich also passed Heras (who, it turned out was riding a broken bike) for second, and Armstrong came in with a group 2 minutes down. Luckily for Armstrong, the climbing is done in this Tour! Pantani was the biggest loser today, nearly 14 minutes down at the line.
