Elgin Street Classic - Ottawa
(courtesy John Large)

Ottawa - The weather threatened but didn't dampen a great evening of cycling in the capital. Cool cloudy conditions couldn't stop the huge crowd from enjoying the action of downtown criterium racing. A team of regional police officers , in full gear including their guns, were given almost a lap headstart on the field in the "Fat Tire Sizzler". It didn't take too long for them to be caught and passed..... no shots were fired. Defending champ, Julian Hine - Schwinn/Toyota, held off breakaway partner Lucas Curran for the win and Intersport's all rounder Glen Rendall won the group sprint for third place.

In the 50 km Elgin Street Classic, Daniel Belisle - Team Guru, out foxed his breakaway companions Bill Hurley and Craig Burge to claim top spot. The trio lapped the field on the tight 1 km course after putting on a show of speed and bike handling. The cream floats to the top. Craig Burge, former National Team rider in the '80's showed the hometown crowd that he can still tear it up with the best of them.

Police estimated 10,000 people lined the popular club and restaurant strip to take in the race. Sponsored by Isotech, Optimum Technologies, Colliers International, Sportable and the World Exchange Plaza, the Elgin Street Classic has become Ottawa's premier bike race.
