April Fools!
Less than 48 hours after breaking ties with the Tinkoff-Saxo team, Bjarne Riis has announced that he is 'exploring options' for a new WorldTour team bid that would include a significant Canadian component.
"Denmark and Canada have a long history together," commented Riis. "We are both Arctic nations and share a border [note: Greenland, a part of the Danish realm], and I know there is a strong Danish-Canadian cycling background with a family called Hansen..."
While Riis cautions that it is still early days for the project - tentatively titled Aprilsnär - he says he has already received a favourable response from the Canadian federal government, who could potentially provide funding under their Northern Strategy initiative [www.northernstrategy.gc.ca], in the Social and Economic Program.
