October 1/15 13:02 pm - Quick Release Recall Affects 1.5 Million Bikes in North America

Seventeen (17) bicycle brands in North America are participating in a voluntary recall concerning front quick releases and disc brakes. The recall affects approximately 1.5 million bikes in North America (approximately 245,000 sold in Canada). Three incidents have been reported involving injuries.

The safety issue is that if the quick release lever is left open or not properly engaged it can come in contact with the front brake disc rotor when riding. The companies (and their specific brands) involved in the recall are Accell North America (Raleigh, Diamondback), Advanced Sports International (Breezer, Fuji, SE), Cycling Sports Group (Cannondale, GT), Felt, G.Joanou Cycle Co. (Jamis), Giant Bicycle, Haro, LTP Sports Group (Norco), Performance Bicycle (Access), Quality Bicycle Products (Civia Cycles), Recreational Equipment Inc. (Novara), Ridley Bikes and Specialized Bicycle Components. [Note: Trek previously issued a recall on this matter, in April]

The Bicycle Product Suppliers Association (BPSA) has created a website with information about the recall, including a website to determine whether your bike is included in the recall and a video (below).



Companies involved in the recall are supplying replacement quick releases to retailers. It should be noted that the affected quick releases date back as far as 1998, so if you are using a front disc brake with a quick release wheel then please check whether your bike is affected.
