Canadian track sprinter Hugo Barrette crashed Wednesday during training in Cali, Colombia, prior to the Track World Cup. According to people onsite, Barrette lost control during a run and went off the track, breaking the guard rail as he went into the stands, briefly losing consciousness. He is currently in hospital with facial lacerations but no serious injuries.
Barrette was scheduled to race the Team Sprint, Sprint and Keirin. Joel Archambault is being flown down to replace Barrette, as Canada tries to qualify for the world championships and Olympics.
Cycling Canada said to us:
"Barrette went over the rail and landed in the spectator seating, suffering a cut over his eye and briefly losing consciousness. He was treated immediately by medical staff and members of the Canadian team, and taken to hospital where he was found to have no broken bones or internal injuries. He was the only cyclist involved in the crash."
"Barrette is being kept in hospital under observation and will return to Canada as soon as he is able to travel."
