2000-2001 Athletes Developmental Program - Victoria, B.C.

The new expanded training group will allow more junior and developmental athletes to access annual coaching programs and athlete services at the PacificSport National Cycling Centre. Applications to the program from top cycling prospects from across Canada in Track, Road, XC and Cyclo-Crosse are encouraged.

Top young cycling prospects from across Canada will be eligible for a new developmental program to be offered this fall (October 01, 2000) at the PacificSport National Cycling Centre in Victoria. Applications will be accepted immediately for a limited number of openings in the PacificSport National Cycling Centre BRONZE TRAINING GROUP.

This program will allow us to increase the level of support for qualified athletes. We believe there are great benefits from frequent contacts between promising riders and high level coaches, and we want to open the door each year to more motivated athletes. Yury Kashirin, head coach and director of the centre, will supervise the program, with fully certified level 4 NCCP National Assistant Coach Houshang Amiri as the lead coach.

The 1999-2000 Bronze Training Group has enjoyed great success this year. Bronze Group Athletes Erica Drew, Erinne Willock, Carter Hovey, Jason Crookham, Keith Bruneau and Tyler Hansen have excelled in World Championship, World Cup, and National level competitions. We now strive to make a greater commitment to new and developmental athletes.

The program is partly funded by the Province of BC Regional Training Centre Program, the PacificSport National Cycling Centre and coaching fees. We expect to announce scholarships for interested athletes shortly.

PacificSport National Cycling Centre BRONZE Training Group Services:

Number of Athletes: Recommended number 12. ( dependent on number of Silver and Gold athletes residing in Victoria)

Selection Procedure: 8 athletes by results, 4 or more by committee choice.

Supervised for Quadrennial and Annual Training Program, which will include:
1. Full annual individual training program and consultations with coach
2. Coach evaluation at events as possible
3. Sport Works "Bronze" card (includes access to all participating Greater Victoria strength training facilities, and all PacificSport Sport athlete support programs and the SportHouse Program)
4. Invitation to National Training Camp in Victoria

Selection Criteria:
A. Priority to BC Athlete Assistance Program athletes
B. Be based or willing to move to Victoria
C. Willing to train within the guidelines of the PacifcSport National Cycling Centre
D. Programs prescribed or monitored and approved by Pacificsport National Cycling Centre coaches
E. having achieved the following performance standards:

1. National Road, XC and Cyclo-Cross results
a. Elite Men and Women Top 10
b. Espoir Men Top 6
c. Junior Men and Women Top 5

2. National Track Results
a. Elite Men and Women Top 6 individual, and Top 3 Team (medal winner) events
b. Junior Men and Women Top 3 individual events

3. Canada Cup XC over all standings
a. Elite Men and Women Top 5
b. Espoir Men Top 5
c. Junior Men and Women Top 5

4. BC Provincial Championships, Track (individual events only), Road, CX and Cyclo-Cross BC Cup winners
a. Junior Men and Women Top 2
b. Senior Men and Women Top 3
c. For Track athletes achieving BC team time standards in major competition

5. CCA Approved athletes from other Provinces attending University or high school and residing in Victoria

6. Athletes who show exceptional potential to achieve National and International results

7.Selected Athletes From Talent Identification Program

8.Selected Athletes based on committee choice

Fee: $ 600.00

(PacificSport National Cycling Centre fee to be paid in full on acceptance to Bronze Training Group Program)

Scholarships:

A limited number of scholarships up to 50% are available for selected athletes needing support. Please contact Houshang Amiri at cycling@ampsc.com for an application for a scholarship.

A. The Bronze Training Group is a training group, not a competition teams. Riders will remain with their club and race for them.

Perras Update

Canadian road pro Dominique Perras (Phonak) just dropped us a line to say he had finished 40th in the Coppa Agostoni on Thursday, August 17th (won by Telekom's Jan Ullrich). Dominique finished in the pack, 4:12 down.

Alexandre Cloutier décroche le gros lot en Pennsylvanie

Trexlertown, Pennsylvanie (DIAPO) - Alexandre Cloutier, de l'équipe Volkswagen, allait à Trexler pour participer à la U.S. Madison Cup sans savoir à quoi s'attendre. Non seulement s'y est-il amusé, mais il a triomphé avec son coéquipier de la semaine, Glen Rendall d'Ottawa, et reviendra à Montréal plus riche de quelques centaines de dollars américains.

Les deux hommes ont bien entrepris la longue course aux points en prenant le premier rang après les 50 premiers tours de 333 mètres. Au moment de la pause, Cloutier et Rendall comptaient 23 points, deux de mieux que le duo américain installé au deuxième rang. Les deux Canadiens ont amassé 31 points de plus lors des 100 derniers tours pour terminer sur un pied d'égalité, à 54 points, avec un duo australien. Victorieux du premier segment, les Canadiens ont été couronnés champions.

" On a gagné et c'est excellent ! " ont été les premiers commentaires de Cloutier après la course. " Nous sommes arrivés mercredi pour répéter nos relais et nous avons vaincu de grosses équipes. Après la course, on savait que nous étions parmi les meneurs. Quand nous avons vu le tableau, nous étions fous de joie. "

Le cycliste de Sainte-Foy a particulièrement aimé l'ambiance qui régnait dans le Lehigh Valley Velodrome, qui présente des courses pour une 25e année de suite. " Il y avait environ 1000 spectateurs, a-t-il expliqué. Ici, les gens s'achètent des billets de saisons pour assister à différents types de courses dans plusieurs catégories. C'était drôle après notre victoire parce qu'il y avait des jeunes qui nous demandaient des autographes ", a conclu un Cloutier amusé.

Cloutier rejoindra ses coéquipiers de l'équipe Volkswagen samedi soir, à la Nocturne de Saint-Bruno.

Choquette, deuxième à l'individuel et deuxième en tandem

Ste-Scholastique (DIAPO) - Une semaine après avoir terminé au deuxième rang du contre-la-montre individuel au championnat québécois de cyclisme sur route, Pascal Choquette a mérité la médaille d'argent au contre-la-montre du championnat québécois handisport, présenté à Sainte-Scholastique (Mirabel).

Appelé à remplacer son coéquipier chez Volkswagen Alexandre Cloutier, Choquette pilotait le tandem complété par Julie Cournoyer. Le duo a franchi les 15 kilomètres en 20 :58 minutes alors que les paralympiens Stéphane Côté et Mathieu Fagnan complétaient le même parcours en 20 :05 min. pour gagner l'épreuve. Fabien Bergeron, un autre membre de l'équipe Volkswagen, et Yvon Provencher, qui feront équipe aux Jeux paralympiques de Sydney, ont terminé au troisième rang.

" Comme Alexandre participe à une course sur piste en fin de semaine, il m'a demandé de faire équipe avec Julie, d'expliquer Choquette. Nous avons pédaler ensemble trois fois avant la compétition. Je vous dis que piloter un tandem, c'est comme conduire un autobus quand on est habitué à une auto. Julie s'entraîne régulièrement avec d'autres pilotes, mais moi je ne fais jamais de tandem ", de continuer Choquette, qui semble avoir apprécié l'expérience. " Je suis content parce que nous avons garder une vitesse moyenne de près de 45 kilomètres à l'heure. "

Choquette accompagnera Cournoyer à la course sur route, samedi matin, et se dirigera sur la Rive-Sud pour prendre part à la Nocturne de St-Bruno...sur son vélo à lui.
