Olympic Tune Up

Coach/Manager Kurt Innes has sent another report from Dallas, Texas, where he is helping Tanya Dubnicoff with her pre-Olympic training.

Finished another day of our pre-Olympic simulation last night.

The Superdrome in Frisco hosts a "sprint night" each Friday night. The format is simple, whoever shows up gets to ride sprints . Ability based, fast against fast, beginners against beginners, etc.

Started out the night with a flying 200 M t.t. Another sub 11.5 effort, and a really good day two result to set up the night. The rest of the night was for sprinting ( to simulate the 1/4 finals at the Olympics) Duber rode against Danny Wilson (former masters world champ, and current US masters champion in sprint event) in the first ride of the night. Danny took the lead going into the bell with a very quick pass underneath. Duber was able to sit on Danny until the last corner,then blast by him for the win. (12.0 final time)

Ride two was against Nick Chenwoth (world masters record holder in flying 200 M t.t), Tanya held the lead going into the bell and both riders were really winding it up. The speed going into the bell was 62 km/hr. Tanya was shoulder to shoulder with Nick around turns 1 and 2, and Nick started to edge past Tanya on the backstraight. Tanya kept calm and increased her tempo. Duber pulled even with Nick going into turn 3, and then hit the gas into turn 4. Tanya held on for the win . (11.8 final 200 m time ).

Again the weather was super hot. 107 degrees at our 7 pm start time!

We currently have 3 weeks to go till Sydney, and the Olympic Games. The riding and training is going very well, and excitement is really building!

Travelling home to Calgary tomorrow morning , home for a week then into Adelaide for two weeks of indoor aclimation in Aussie.

Mount Washington Hillclimb - New Hampshire

Genevieve Jeanson finished second to legendary Jeannie Longo in this 12.2 kilometre climb. To add insult to injury, Longo also knocked 4 minutes off the record Jeanson set last year (Jeanson was also 2 minutes ahead of her previous record).

Une arrivée au sprint au championnats québécois

St-Scholastique (DIAPO) - La petite municipalité de St-Scholastique accueillait ce week-end les championnats québécois handisport de cyclisme sur route. Après la présentation du contre-la-montre vendredi, les cyclistes remontaient en selle samedi pour la course sur route de 75 kilomètres. Les trois premières places de l'épreuve se sont décidées au sprint final. Le tandem composé de Mathieu Fagnan et Stéphane Côté a remporté l'or, suivi de très près par Fabien Bergeron et Yvon Provencher. Christophe Cheseaux et Sylvain Nadeau ont mérité le bronze.

" Ils (Fagnan et Côté) étaient dur à battre en fin de semaine, a souligné Fabien Bergeron. Le sprint a été très dangereux car il y avait une courbe où nous aurions pu être déportés. J'ai même eu un peu peur de tomber ! " Tout comme en cyclisme, les tandems peuvent atteindre des pointes de 60 km/h au sprint. Seule différence, très importante, le synchronisme des deux partenaires doit être parfait car sinon, c'est bonjour l'asphalte !

Tout comme vendredi, Pascal Choquette poursuivait son apprentissage de conducteur alors qu'il remplaçait son coéquipier de chez Volkswaggen, Alexandre Cloutier, ce dernier prenant part à une course sur piste en Pennsylvanie. Choquette, qui servait de guide à la paralympienne Julie Provencher, a expliqué que son manque d'expérience en tandem ne lui a pas facilité les choses : " Le tout s'est joué au troisième tour, a-t-il mentionné. Fabien (Bergeron) et Yvon (Provencher) nous ont dépassé par la gauche pour rejoindre les deux premiers et je n'ai jamais eu le temps de réagir. En tandem, ça prends beaucoup plus de temps pour démarrer une accélération et je l'ai appris à nos dépends. Une fois notre bonne vitesse atteinte, les trois premiers vélos étaient déjà trop loin. "

Bergeron et Choquette ne chômeront pas bien longtemps car ils seront de la partie à la Nocturne de St-Bruno, qui sera présentée dans quelques heures (samedi soir).
