Grand Prix Feminine, Quebec
The GP Feminine is scheduled to start tomorrow, running through until Sunday. Unlike last year, when the final stage was a criterium that had little effect on the overall standings, this year the riders finish with a tough road race that will leave the final standings open until the end.
Among the starters is the ageless Jeannie Longo, fresh off a win over Genevieve Jeanson at the Mount Washington Hillclimb. Jeanson is not participating in the GP, however, there are a number of other strong challengers to Longo. Canada has the strongest team - with Olympians Lyne Bessette, Clara Hughes and Chrissy Redden riding for the national squad. Elita has a full team, as does Intersports. One of the other teams to watch will be the International Mixed team, with Tracey Gaudry and Pam Schuster.

USCF Criterium Championship

Mercury's US Olympian, Derek Bouchard-Hall, won the US National title by winning the USPRO Criterium Championship Sunday in Downer's Grove, IL.
Bouchard-Hall, who will represent the US in the Olympic Team Pursuit, was second in the US Road Trails earlier this year and 2nd in this event last year, finally found the top step of the podium.
The 100k race was held in beautiful mild weather, but the action was hot. The first half of the 62 laps saw little serious attacking while everyone was getting a feel for the strategies to be revealed later.
In the last half of the race, the pace picked up and the most serious attack of the day saw 10 riders go clear with 21 laps to go. In the group were Mercury's Gord Fraser, Scott Moninger, and Mike Sayers. With Fraser in the group, the Saturn, Navigators, and Shaklee rider would not work. The group had a maximum gap of 30 seconds when the alarm bells began to ring in the field. It was the Saturn team who took control to bring the group back. They put their entire team on the front and for 8 laps, it was a test of wills.
Mercury held the upper hand, since the chase was sure to kill off any train attempts by Saturn in the last few laps. Indeed, after the group was caught, it was Mercury who took charge of the race.
In the last lap and a half, Mercury went to the front with only 15 riders able to keep pace. It was Chris Horner and Henk Vogels who led Bouchard-Hall and Fraser around to the last turn. Bouchard-Hall was first out of the turn and never looked back as Fraser cruised in for second.
