G.P. Feminin - Quebec
Sarah Ulmer has given Team Elita the lead in the opening stage of the Grand Prix Feminin International du Quebec. The Elita team was aggressive all day, with Ulmer, Annie Gariepy and Karen Dunne all launching attacks and counter-attacks until Ulmer and Melanie McQuaid (Team Canada) broke free with 15 kilometres remaining. With 5 kilometres to go, the duo had a 20 second gap, but then the peloton put the hammer down. Ulmer managed to stay clear of a late charge by Lyne Bessette (Team Canada) to take the stage and the leader's jersey. "The next two stages are very hilly, so I knew this was my only chance to win.", explained the Olympic bound New Zealand track rider.
One rider who everyone will be watching for as the riders head into the hills on tomorrow's 123 kilometre stage will be Jeannie Longo, fresh off her victory at the Mount Washington Hillclimb. However, Longo wasn't looking too happy today, concerned about the cold, wet conditions the riders were facing. "I am looking forward to the climbs." the defending Olympic champion smiled.
