Manitoulin Ride
(courtesy Sandra Kleppe)
On Sunday Oct. 1, just when the fall colours are at their peak, BIKE MANITOULIN and the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy are co-sponsoring a cycle event which combines a great ride, a hike to enjoy the scenery from Manitoulin's most scenic spot, and a hot buffet dinner at one of our nicest resorts.
We will meet at Red Lodge on the Bidwell Road (call for instructions) at 1:00 pm. From there we will ride 18 kms to the Cup and Saucer Bluff and hike the nature trail recently acquired by the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy. Cyclists can hike the short trail to the top of the bluff (about 3km) or the longer trail(6km) for the more energetic. Either choice will offer breath-taking views of the fall colours.
After the hike and some simple refreshments provided at the base of the trail, we will ride together back to Red Lodge where a full buffet dinner awaits us. Renowned for their great meals, Al and Anita Frank will offer a choice of three hot entrees, a variety of salads and vegetables, coffee, tea and a choice of desserts. Riders who arrive back at the resort early can enjoy a drink on the deck.
Following the dinner, door prizes will be awarded and we will be on our way home by 7:00 pm. The total cost for this rally is $25 per person, with half price for children under twelve. Any profit from this rally will go to support the efforts of the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy in developing a system of nature trails across Manitoulin.
The round trip by bicycle from Red Lodge to Cup & Saucer is 36 kms on hard surfaced back roads through beautiful maple forests and around Lake Manitou. Registration is limited to 50 cyclists and we will accept advance registrations only until Sept. 28.
