Ottawa Bicycle Club Honours Founders

The Ottawa Bicycle Club announces the award of life memberships to founders and early organizers of the (reformed) Ottawa Bicycle Club.

The new life members, Alan Large, Peter Tyler, Mike McCall, Bob Oades and Brian Parkin, together were instrumental in bringing British-style club cycling to Ottawa in the 1970's. All were prominent in Canadian cycling at some time during the past 30 years. They join current life member, 84 year old Roy Fowler (who is still riding his bike). Previous life members included the late Lee Gault, a professional cyclist and champion in the 1920's.

The new life members will be guests of honour at the Club's Annual Awards Banquet November 11th.

The Ottawa Bicycle Club was reconstituted in 1970. The original club was
established in 1882 and operated until 1923 when it split into district
associations. It currently has 1,000 members.

Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce Hires Coordinator

The Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce, one of the only UCI ranked stage races in North America, has announced that they will be able to retain the services of a full-time coordinator for the entire 2001 year. In the past, this role has been filled on a part-time or seasonal basis only, which has restricted the ability of the organization to pursue sponsorship opportunities. GP Beauce has hired Patrick Lajoie, a national level cycling coach with a degree in physical education, for the position.

GP Beauce has struggled in recent years (as have many road races) to attract the sponsorship and funding needed to produce the event. We hope that this appointment will assure the continuance of what is considered by many riders to be the hardest and best stage race in North America.


Olympic Coverage

In theory we will be bring you lap-by-lap coverage of the women's mountain bike race this evening. We say "in theory" because we aren't sure whether our reporter is going to be able to get through to us via cellphone from the course.

The race starts at 10:00 pm EDT (7:00 pm Pacific), so check back around that time for updates.


BTAC - Canadian Cyclist Survey

The survey is to be taken down shortly, so that we can analyze the results (a full description of the survey appears below). The response has been very good, but we would like to get as many readers as possible (from as many regions of the country as possible). The survey will help members of the cycling industry to understand trends and patterns within the cycling community, so that they can better provide the products and services you, our readers, want. Canadian Cyclist will also use the survey results to better understand the demographics and cycling interests of our readers.

No personal identifying information is collected during this survey, and the data will become part of a report that is available to all members of BTAC - retailers, distributors and manufacturers in Canada.
