Road Worlds - Plouay, France
As the riders start their last lap, Axel Merckx (Bel) has a small gap on a group of just over 30. This is pretty ambitious, given that Boogerd, Jose Rubiera (Esp), Tchmil, Freire, Casagrande, Davide Rebellin (Ita), Bartoli, Virenque and Camenzind are still in the chasing group. Chann McRae is also still there. A further 20 seconds back is a second group with Brochard, and then the remaining remnants of the former front group of 50 at 32 seconds in arrears to Merckx. Merckx is caught by the Italians and Tchmil launches a counter-attack, which is getting more daylight than Merckx did. With 10 kilometres to go, his gap on the chasers is up over 10 seconds. Jalabert abandoned last lap.
