Le Bronze pour le Tandem Cournoyer-Cloutier

Première médaille canadienne aux Jeux paralympiques

Montréal vendredi 20 octobre 2000 (2h00). Le Canada se retrouve maintenant dans le tableau des médailles après deux jours de compétitions, puisque le tandem composé de Julie Cournoyer, de Sherbrooke, et du pilote Alexandre Cloutier, de Québec, a remporté la médaille de bronze en poursuite, sur la piste du vélodrome des Jeux paralympiques de Sydney. Les Québécois ont enregistré un chrono de 3 minutes 35.174 secondes, soit 3 secondes d'avance sur le tandem américain constitué de Karissa Whitsell et David Yates jr (3:38.624). "Elle est très belle la médaille et aussi très lourde! Mais ils ne l'ont pas retranscrite en braille, comme ce fut le cas à Atlanta en 96" de dire le cycliste Cloutier. Les Biélorusses Irina Fiadotava et Aliaksandr Danilik sont repartis avec la médaille d'or suite à une performance de 3:34.253, soit cinq dixièmes de secondes de mieux que les Italiens Silvana Valente et Fabrizio Di Somma(3:34.993).

"Nous sommes très satisfaits parce que le niveau était très élevé cette année et c'est difficile d'en demander plus! Nous avons réussi à dépasser les Américains dans les trois derniers tours. à ce moment, nous roulions beaucoup plus vite qu'eux. C'est comme ça que nous les avons eus et nous étions très contents" de dire la Sherbrookoise de 30 ans.

"Les Américains ont eu le meilleur temps hier aux qualifications, mais ils ont perdu en demi-finale face aux Italiens. Ce matin, ce fut très serré, tout comme en demi-finale contre les Biélorusses. [...] On regarde toujours pour le podium et comme je disais à Julie, même si nous avons perdu en demi-finale, il était important de gagner la médaille de bronze, à notre dernier événement de la journée, pour terminer ça en beauté!", d'ajouter le pilote émérite, qui est aussi champion canadien en poursuite individuelle. Demain, le tandem participera au contre-la-montre de 1 km, épreuve dont les trois meilleurs chronos se mériteront des médailles, sans rondes préliminaires. Stéphane Côté, de Beauport, et Matthieu Fagnan, de Montréal, prendront part en matinée aux essais du sprint en tandem masculin.


Ontario University Cup Mountain Bike Race Series, Race #3

The rookie members of Ontario's university mountain bike teams jaws may have dropped a bit as they walked around the ski chalet at Kelso to see what was awaiting them at the start area of the University Cup race # 3. Yes, this course put the "mountain" into "mountain biking" (..You BC readers..remember..we're in Ontario). For those who have skied down the ski hill at Kelso in the winter you may not have thought much about it. But have you thought what it might feel like to bike *UP* it?

Well the nearly 100 racers from Universities across Ontario have been training hard and were ready for it. The "A (Expert) racers were eager to race as were the "B" (sport) racers. A one kilometer accent followed by some great twisting and turning through the forests of the Niagara escarpment.

Mike Dennis (University of Guelph) got back on the bike and was the top male Expert racer. Walt Bayless who had sat out the first two races of the season in order to help his rookie racers as a coach got back on the bike too and was UofT's top male Expert racer. Queen's, Laurentian and University of Ottawa racers were also represented in the top 10 of that division. In the Woman's Expert race McMaster sensation Sue Trimble beat Celine Foreht (University of Toronto) to take home the gold. Despite some trouble on the course Amanda Kellett (University of Guelph) took the bronze and remains tops in the women's overall standings.This years UofT rookie Caitlin Dmitriew from Thunder Bay came in a very respectable 5th in her first Expert race after moving up from Sport division. In the men's Sport division team Queen's racer Kevin Cymbalisty hammered through to take top place, adding to the overall team lead that Queen's has in the series. Go Gales!! Gordon Morrison (McMaster) won the silver and Waterloo nice guy Andrew Cameron captured the bronze.

The highlight of the race for all the schools was the outstanding races put in by all the woman racers in the Sport division. B team leader, Krista Broadhurst (University of Toronto) took the gold after a hard race followed closely by Waterloo racer Amy Dawson. Antonia Gawel (UofT) captured the bronze despite a recent cold. Carla Nanka-Bruce (Queen's), Bonnie Sheppard (Queen's), Tara Nichols (UofT), Mey Von Moltke-Pao (UofT) Gillian Millett (McMaster), MacBonnie Dong (UofT) and Tabby Soltay (UofT) all turned in outstanding performances and made us proud.

...and by the way...the best part about a 1km slow accent up a hill......the lightening fast decent waiting for you on the other side.
