Canada struggled for a second day at the Track Cycling World Championships on Friday, in Hong Kong. Steph Roorda crashed heavily in the third event of the Omnium competition after two riders went down in front of her and she could not avoid them. The Vancouver rider was examined and diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder, and is expected to make a quick recovery. Roorda went into the Elimination Race in eighth place overall, after having finished third in the second event, the Tempo Race. She was unable to start the final Points Race.
In other competition, Hugo Barrette qualified tenth in the Men's Sprint, setting a personal best time for the 200 metre time trial of 9.892 seconds. He then beat the new Keirin world champion, Azizulhasni Awang of Malaysia, in the first round of sprinting, before losing in the second round to Ryan Owens of Great Britain. It is the furthest Barrette has ever advanced at the world championships in the Sprint.
"It was a pretty good finish for me at Worlds," said Barrette. "First top-10 at Worlds for me, which gives me hope that I can one day be on the podium. I had just a wobble in the second ride; my back wheel slipped and I lost some speed and has to re-accelerate. I did my best, but I couldn't come back."
Jay Lamoureux finished 19th in the Men's Individual Pursuit, while Adam Jamieson did not finish the Men's Points Race.
