Austria's Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora – Hansgrohe) earned the honour of being the first rider to wear the Maglia Rosa of the 100th Giro d’Italia after his win of the 206km first stage from Alghero-Olbia. Caleb Ewan (Orica – Scott) and André Greipel (Lotto Soudal) finished second and third.
Mike Woods was top Canadian finishing 75th at 13 econds back.
