Defending champions Silber pro Cycling bounced back on stage 2 of the Grand Prix Cycliste de Saguenay on Friday, after missing the key break on the opening stage, by finishing 1-2, with Emile Jean taking the win in a sprint finish. Team Canada's Boivin finished third on the 171 kilometre stage, and moves to within three seconds of the overall lead held by Steve Fisher (Canyon Bicycles) after time bonuses were factored in.
"On the last lap there was a split of eight guys," explained Boivin. "I was really driving that group; it was a gamble but we had to take it. I was a bit flat in the sprint as a result."
A small break was monitored by Fisher's Canyon squad and was never a threat. With two laps to go the Jelly Belly team upped the tempo, and Team Canada took over on the last lap. A sizable crash in the crosswinds on the final lap caused some disarray, and a small group of eight containing Jean, Boivin, race leader Fisher and a third Canadian, Jean Simon d'Anjou (Garneau Quebecor) managed to open a small lead, which they held to the line.
Team Canada manager Kevin Field commented, ""It's great to see all the Canadian teams active here. Congrats to Silber. Great rebound race for them. They lost a lot of guys in the crash on the last lap, but fortunately, everyone should be ok. For us, it was another great day. The team was awesome - James [Piccoli], Leandre [Bouchard] and Ben [Perry] all did the job for Guillaume today. We're in a good spot with two stages to go! Fingers crossed ... there is a lot of racing still to go."
