August 17/17 14:21 pm - Road Worlds Quotas Released - Canada Gets 6 Women & 3 Men

The UCI has released the quotas for the Road World Championships, which will be held in Bergen, Norway on September 17-24.  Quotas are based on UCI ranking points for nations, plus provisions for additional spots for Continental, Olympic or reigning world champions (should they not have already qualified through individual rankings).

Women

For the Road Race, the top five nations get seven starting spots, teams ranked from sixth to 15th are allocated six spots, and 16th to 20th get five. Remaining teams get three places.  Canada is ranked tenth and will get six spots.  In the Time Trial, all nations get two spots (the USA with world champion Amber Neben and Continental champions get an extra spot for the specific champions).

There is no Under-23 category for women, but for Juniors in the Road Race, Canada gets four spots (top five nations get five).  In the Time Trial it is the same as Elite, with two riders per country.

Men

For the Road Race, the top-10 nations get nine spots, followed by six for nations ranked 11th to 20th, and three for nations ranked 21st to 30th, with one spot for 31st to 50th.  Canada is 25th, so three start spots.  In the Time Trial, same as the women with two spots for every nation (the world champion and Continental champions get an extra spot for the specific champions).

In the Under-23 men, Canada gets the maximum five spots, as do all of the top 22 nations.  In the Time Trial, same as the Elite men with two spots for every nation.

The top ten teams in Junior men get six spots for the Road Race, 11th through 15th get five spots and 16th to 20th get four.  Canada squeaks in at 18th with four.  In the Time Trial, same as the Elite men with two spots for every nation.
