CCA Condolences

Ottawa, December 11, 2000 - The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) wishes to express a deep sense of sadness after learning the death of Roger Sumner, an active member of the Canadian cycling community. Mr. Sumner passes away last Saturday at the General Hospital in Vancouver at the age of 63, a few days after being struck by a motor vehicle. The CCA offers heart felt condolences to the Sumner family and wishes strength and courage to all his friends and relatives through this difficult time.

Mr. Sumner was highly involved in the development of cycling in Canada. He is a founding member of the first B.C. Bicycling Association, now known as Cycling B.C. He worked as a dedicated volunteer for many years, sitting on the Boards of the Provincial and the National Associations. He also contributed to many committees through the years.

An admired coach and respected competitor, Mr. Sumner participated in numerous competitions as a true ambassador to cycling. Pierre Hutsebaut, the CCA's National Racing Program Director, recalls with emotion Roger's participation at the 1974 World Championship in Montreal, and when he finally became Road National Champion, in 1996, as a Master athlete.

The cycling community will remember Roger Sumner for his love of sport and enormous contribution to Canadian cycling.

Navigators 2001 Squad

The Navigators Professional Cycling Team announced today its roster of athletes for the 2001 professional road-racing season. The eleven-man roster includes eight returning members from the 2000 team in addition to three new signings. New to the team are Kirk O'Bee (USA), Siro Camponogara (Italy) and Oleg Grichkine (Russia). Siro raced as a guest rider of the team during July in several domestic single-day and stage-race events. Kirk, Siro and Oleg will provide added depth and experience to the team's solid core group.

The athletes returning for the new season are Chris Baldwin, Vassili Davidenko, Todd Littlehales, U.S. National Time Trial Champion - Adham Sbeih, Burke Swindlehurst, Franky Van Haesebroucke, Brendon Vesty and Mark Walters.

Ed Beamon, the team's Director Sportif said, "This is the most complete Navigators team to date. Our three new acquisitions continue our commitment to growth while providing great depth of international experience. I am certain that this team will be competitive with anyone in North America. I am also excited about the continued support of Litespeed Titanium Bicycles and grateful for the enthusiasm and energy our growing list of industry sponsors have provided our organization."

The team is entering its eighth year as a TTII international cycling team affiliated with the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the U.S. Professional Racing Organization (USPRO), the global and national governing bodies of professional cycling, respectively. The team's goals for 2001 include the USPRO Tour (the premier Professional cycling series in the U.S.), and the 47-event USA Cycling National Racing Calendar. Internationally, the team expects to compete in major UCI events in select European, South American and Oceanic Countries. In addition to its demanding competition schedule, the team participates in numerous community, school and charity events throughout the United States, promoting the family-oriented, healthy, sporting atmosphere that cycling creates.
