Both the men's and the women's Visalia, California criteriums resulted in a field sprint in yesterday's downtown, technical 0.8 mile, 8 corner course. With the weather warm and sunny, there were many spectators out enjoying the excitement of professional bicycle racers from all over the world utilizing their local race as the final race preparation before the Redlands Classic, which kicks off Tuesday.

Despite many attacks in the 40 lap, 28 mile women's race, no substantial time gaps formed, and the group arrived together to the finish line. With an awesome lead out from Saturn teammates Kim Davidge, Lyne Bessette and Suzanne Sonye, Petra Rossner came storming down the finishing straight to nip Nicole Freedman at the line for the win. Bessette's lead out was so impressive no one else could come by her and she rolled across the line in fourth place.

The men's race mimicked the outcome of the women's. The 60 lap, 48 mile race featured many attacks from the Saturn Squad as they tried to initiate a break. However, the Mercury Team had some payback in mind after the prior day's loss to the Saturn Team. Thus, with eight laps to go, the bunch prepared for the inevitable field sprint. The dueling lead out was fast and furious, thrilling the local fans of the two teams. The Saturn train brought Ivan Dominguez to the fore, but in the fray, it was Mercury's Gord Fraser coming out on top, with teammate Baden Cooke finishing second. Dominguez finished on the podium in third.

Bessette prouve encore sa bonne forme

Visalia, Californie (DIAPO) - La table est maintenant mise pour la Redlands Classic. Pour une deuxième fin de semaine de suite, la cycliste Lyne Bessette a prouvé sa bonne forme en obtenant les 1er et 4e rangs des deux épreuves de la Classique de Sequoia, en Californie.

Samedi, à Rocky Hill, Bessette a remporté une course de 77 kilomètres (48 milles) présenté sur un circuit routier d'environ 15 kilomètres. "Cette course semble toujours facile, mais il y a une montée qui peut faire mal, a expliqué Bessette. Dès le départ, deux filles se sont échappées alors que je suis demeurée dans le peloton. Au début du troisième tour, j'ai rejoint celle qui était devenue la meneuse et dès le plat suivant, je l'ai larguée. J'ai donc roulé seule pendant presque trois tours et j'ai gagné loin devant le peloton."

Dimanche, les mêmes athlètes se tapaient un critérium de 40 tours pour un total de 44 kilomètres (28 miles). Petra Rossner, coéquipière de Bessette chez Saturn, l'a emporté au sprint. "Nous n'avions pas de plan précis, mais nous avons participé à toutes les attaques. Je me suis même retrouvée en solo trois ou quatre fois. Avec sept tours à faire, un petit groupe s'est formé à l'avant, mais avec deux tours à faire, le peloton nous a rejoint. À partir de ce moment, il était clair que nous (les membres de l'équipe Saturn) préparerions la table pour Petra, qui est allée gagner le sprint final.

"Je suis contente de ma fin de semaine. Les courses n'étaient pas trop longue et je me sens d'attaque pour la Classique de Redlands. L'équipe va bien et tout semble positif."

La Classique de Redlands, qui comptent six étapes, regroupent les meilleures équipes nord-américaines et se veut le premier vrai test de la saison. Bessette y sera avec Saturn, mais on pourra également voir à l'oeuvre les Geneviève Jeanson, Annie Gariépy et compagnie.

Victoria Cycling League Series Kickoff Race

Great start to the Victoria Cycling League Series on Sunday March 11 in the sunny Highlands. Generous prize donations from Straight Up Cycles, Bike Cellar, Oak Bay Bikes, Riders Cycles, Schwalbe Tires, Sports Traders and Lifestyle Markets. It's wonderful to have the support of our local businesses to encourage our riding community.

Cat A group - Geoff Kabush led the pace throughout with an eventual finish of a minute and a half on the rest of the pack. However, when the pack did finish it was a great sprint from Spin Drs. Bob Cameron and Forte rider Sam Whittingham.

Cat B group had some excellent team work from the Schwalbe riders and first to cross the line was Simon Ciceri who last year had serious health problems and didn't even know whether he'd be well enough to race ever again. Welcome back Simon!
