Marianne Vos took both the stage and overall victory in the final stage of the ASDA Women’s Tour de Yorkshire. She relegated Margarita Garcia (Movistar Team Women) and Soraya Paladin (Ale Cipollini) to places two and three in the final sprint, after the three broke away in the last hour of the race.
The second and last stage started in rainy Yorkshire and the peloton fought strong winds and hail before the finish in Scarborough.
According to CCC - Liv Sports director Jeroen Blijlevens: “It was difficult to decide on a clear tactic in advance, the course was decisive. At least we knew that we had to be attentive after the start, because with force 6 wind blowing from the side on occasion, the break could happen early. Particularly on the second climb of the day, we had to stay alert as it was the logical place where the stage would develop.”
This is exactly what happened: Anna van der Breggen jumped away on the Côte de Hooks House Farm and was joined by Lizzie Deignan. Vos raced well in front of the bunch, but did not make the crossing. On the following climb, when the chasing peloton had nearly caught van der Breggen, the Dutch rider accelerated again. Soraya Paladin and Annemiek van Vleuten joined on, resulting in three leaders and a strong chasing group, including Vos.
With less than fifty kilometres to go, the three leaders were caught. On the Côte de Grosmont, the Spaniard Garcia went away. Vos and Paladin attacked on the Côte de Ugglebarnby and joined her. The three worked well and maintained a gap of 15 seconds, on a determined but small group of chasers.
With less than ten kilometres to the finish, the remainder of the chasing group gave up and the the winner was to come from the leading three. Vos powered away from the others in the final sprint, taking not only the stage win, but also the final classification.
Lone Canadian Alison Jackson (Team TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank) finished 19th on the stage at 3:50 back and 13th overall at 3:59 back.
