Team Canada set two national records on the opening day of competition at the Junior Track World Championships in Frankfurt, Germany, on Wednesday. The Junior men's Team Sprint squad of James Hedgcock, Andrew Scott and Riley Pickrell knocked nearly a second off the national record, with a new time of 46.280 seconds, eventually finishing eighth overall. In the men's Team Pursuit, the squad of Tristan Jussaume, Riley Pickrell, Sean Richardson and Jackson Kinniburgh set a qualifying time of4:06.342, nearly 3.5 seconds faster than old record. In the next round, the team went even faster, with a time of 4:05.358, however, did not qualify for the medal round, finishing eighth overall. In other events, the Canadian women's Team Pursuit squad was eighth and Ngaire Barraclough won her qualifier in the Scratch Race and finished ninth in the Final.
"Breaking the record in the first ride was a great excitement for us," said Jackson Kinniburgh after the Team Pursuit. "The few weeks we've been training together has been really good, and we set a goal of breaking the Canadian record and we did it, not once, but twice. I think everyone's happy and proud of what we did today. It was a big day for us."
"Doing a team event at world level was a feeling like no other," said Andrew Scott after the Team Sprint. "To race with the fastest guys in Canada, to see how fast you can really go is an awesome experience and feeling. The whole atmosphere and feeling when you're on the track with the timer ticking down is an exciting, adrenaline-fuelling experience."
"We waited on the start line in anticipation as the clock ticked from 5 seconds to 1 and then go. Riley pulled a killer awesome start, ripping it off the line; I dove to get on his wheel, and then James followed. Riley was at top speed when we came along to the home stretch, where I then popped under him after completing a rush. That rush sling-shotted me into the first corner, where I held my speed as closely as I could. I peeled off and James flew under me; Riley and I were cheering on James for the final lap as he rode under us. James flew around the final corner, until the finish."
"We looked up at the clock to see we set a new Canadian record of 46.280 . It was a great experience to race with these boys and to share this experience with them; everyone executed everything perfectly, and I am very proud to have raced with them!"
