A local newspaper Saguenay newspaper, Le Quotidien, is reporting that the GP Saguenay stage race will face a significant loss of local government funding, which could jeopardize the future of the event.
The event has received funding from the regional government that covers police costs, as well as a grant and in-kind services. In 2019, the race organization received a total of $221,649; over half for policing. This represents over a quarter of the total Events budget for the region, according to Le Quotidien, much more than any other event. Saguenay organizer Simon Ouellet said to the newspaper that government support represents a quarter of the event's budget, and it could not continue without the funding.
A local councillor said that the cut is part of overall budget reductions.
