February 16/20 8:39 am - Taylor & Veal Set Course Record at Valley of the Sun TT

At the recent Para Track Worlds in Milton, the new Canadian tandem team of Lowell Taylor and pilot Ed Veal met the first criteria in their quest to represent Canada at the Tokyo Paralympics. On Friday, they successfully achieved another standard on the road at the Valley of the Sun time trial in Arizona, breaking the course record. Ed Veal sent us a note:

Lowell and I had a really good ride yesterday in the TT here at Valley of the Sun. We are here trying to meet the selection criteria to get selected to the Para Road World Championships held later this year in Belgium. The CCA "A" standard in the TT is 48.9 kms per hour and we rode a 50.1 kph average. We also broke the VoS course record with a 27:39. They had us start at the beginning of the 15-16 year old group and didn't make a separate category for only one tandem. The course description they put up online says the course was 23.58 kms but our Garmin had it as 23.3 kms.

Even with our success on the track in the 4 km IP [Individual Pursuit], we both believed that our best cycling discipline together on the tandem would be in the time trial. Lowell has some big sustained power numbers to go along with his big frame and the same, of course, can be said about me. Combine us together on one bike, hold on and hope the bike stays together.
