Although this was announced online Monday in social media, here is the official confirmation that the 27th edition of the Ontario season-opener Paris to Ancaster has been cancelled.

Due to the ongoing public health situation in regards to the novel COVID-19, and out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of the cycling community, race organizers have made the very difficult decision to cancel the 27th Annual Paris to Ancaster Bike Race, which was set to take place on April 26, 2020.

Paris to Ancaster (P2A) is the oldest, and one of the largest, gravel cycling events in North America. For over 25 years, the race's unpredictable Spring weather, varied and ever-changing terrain, and large field of riders has made it a fan-favourite for cyclists of all levels, from recreational cyclists, to families, to Canadian Olympians.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a novel and rapidly changing situation. The decision to cancel the race was made following the advice of cycling's regional and national governing bodies, the Ontario Cycling Association and Cycling Canada, which have recommended that all mass-start cycling events between March 15th and May 1st be postponed or cancelled.

Tim Farrar, Co-Race Director, provided the following statement:

"This decision did not come easily. This race is a highlight of our year and we know the rider community was looking forward to another great event. Unfortunately, we agree with our governing bodies that holding the event at this time would be irresponsible. Despite the event not moving forward, we want to recognize and thank the hundreds of partners who make this event possible, including the County of Brant, City of Hamilton, local police forces, and especially our dedicated team of volunteers."

During this time, the health and safety of the community is what's most important. Race organizers are asking that those who are able consider donating to the race's charity partners at St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation Hamilton. Health care workers on the front line of this crisis need our support during this difficult time.
