Athina's Ride is named after Kelowna resident and 16-year-old, Athina Merckx, daughter of former Belgian professional cyclist Axel Merkcx and former Canadian National team member Jodie Merckx. In February 2019, Athina noticed pain in the back of her right knee following swim practice and she was diagnosed with the rare condition known as Desmoid Fibromatosis a few months later.
This fundraising ride begins with virtual training rides and culminates on July 10th and 11th with an epic cycling ride of distances ranging from 55 to 160 kilometres. Participants can ride the training sessions and the actual event outdoors on their own or indoors on a stationary trainer. Each participant will log their distances and fundraise, with 100% of the proceeds raised benefitting the Desmoid Tumour Foundation of Canada.
