Intersports Race Report ˆ Tour of the Gila Stage 5

The final day of the 2001 Tour of the Gila, played out like 3 of the 4 days before it. From the start, Genevieve Jeanson's Rona Team set tempo as the group rolled out of the town of Silver City. Once clear of the city's limits, the tiny race leader set out on another of her incredible solo efforts. Jeanson set an incredible tempo on the day's first QOM that only Bessette, Bruckner, Emery, Phillips and Berger could follow....temporarily. One by one, the challengers released their tenuous grip on the race leader's wheel and drifted back to the pack. From there on it was all Jeanson as she steadily increased her lead from 2 minutes at the mid race feed to 6 minutes at the finish over the lonely chasing Bruckner of Saturn and 12 minutes on a group of 9. The actual racing occurred in the chase group on the final climb. At the base 800.com's Andrea Ratkovic attacked and was quickly marked by Bessette, Berger, Emery and Intersports' Jessica Phillips. Phillips had just regained the peloton after a jarring helmet cracking crash on one of many cattle guards punctuating the course. As the 12km climb wore on the group solidified with the final 500 metre kick to the line looming. With the finish in sight, Saturn's Bessette charged in ahead of 800.com's Berger and Ratkovic, who were barely ahead of a revitalized Phillips. Intersports Emery and Matthes followed seconds later. The only change in GC on the day came from, Saturn's Anna Millward who dropped slightly down the rankings after deciding that chasing Jeanson for a 4th consecutive day was futile. Next up for the Intersports' team after a fine 5th and 6th overall placing in Gila is the US National Championships in Redding CA, May 24th and 26th before the Montreal World Cup June 2nd.
