Derek Gee was Canada's top finisher on Day 4 of the Track World Championships in Roubaix, France, finishing tenth overall in the four event Omnium, a personal best at the world championships. Canada's only other competitor was Nick Wammes in the Men's Sprint. Wammes qualified 12th and won his first round heat, but was knocked out in the eighth finals by the fifth fastest qualifier, Mateusz Rudyk of Poland.
"I have a few mixed emotions about sprint today," said Wammes. "Finishing 12th at my first world championships is a result I can be proud of, but I know there were some things that I can clean up and execute better on. There are some key areas I need to work on but it's a great place to build from going into next season. Overall, I'm very happy to be here at Worlds. Bringing the Team Sprint back in is something I've been looking forward to the last few years so to come seventh here with a brand new team is very encouraging and I'm excited to see where we are able to take this discipline in the future."
Gee was eighth in the Scratch Race and sixth in the Tempo, but went out early in the Elimination, finishing 16th. In the final Points Race he only scored a couple of points but, more importantly, avoided being lapped, unlike most of the field. He finished with 68 points.
"I'm happy with the result," said Derek. "My goal going in was to get a top-10; I've never been top-10 in the Omnium at the worlds and that was a big goal of mine, and I just snuck in there. It was a gruelling day, because there were five events with a qualifier in the morning."
"I'm definitely stronger this year then I have been in the past, with the full Team Pursuit focus [for the Olympics]. The races here were just as hard as any world championships I have done, because the top guys are always just as fast every year."
