Gary Lund Classic - B.C.
Courtesy Speed Queens Racing Team
The Gary Lund Classic was held in Sooke BC on Sunday (May 13, 2001). The oldest and most challenging race in BC once again saw a huge field ready to tackle the gruelling climbs and strong winds along the western-most edge of Vancouver Island. The Women's race split apart within the first 15 km of the 80 km test with attacks first by Speed Queen Erica Drew, then by eventual race winner Leah Goldstein of 800.com. Goldstein, who spends most of her time on the US Pro circuit, stayed away from a strong chase group led by Speed Queen Sandra Walter that also included such riders as Olympian Lesley Tomlinson and one of Canada's top women MTB Pros, Kiara Bisaro. The chase groups would split up in the closing kilometers of hilly terrain, but Sandra held strong to finish in the top 10. Not far behind were fellow Speed Queens Erica and Lisa Sweeney. With yet another strong performance, all 3 have secured their places on the BC Team for this summer's prestigious Canada Summer Games.
Next up is a trip to Washington for the Mutual of Enumclaw Stage Race, May 19-20 then the infamous Bastion Square Cycling Festival in Victoria May 26-27.
