Saturn Cycling Team Dominates Housatonic Valley Classic

DANBURY, Conn. -- The Saturn Cycling Team dominated the inaugural Housatonic Valley Classic Sunday, winning both the men's and women's events and placing additional riders on the podium in both races.

Trent Klasna, a 31-year-old from Pine Valley, Calif., outsprinted Chris Baldwin of the Navigators squad to claim the men's race, a 140-mile venture through the rolling scenic New England roads north of Danbury. Klasna's winning time was 5:14:14. His teammate Eric Wohlberg, from Levack, Ontario, took third, finishing at 5:16:21.

In the women's event, a one-hour criterium on a 0.75-mile course in the center of Danbury, Kimberly Bruckner of Boulder, Colo., led a Saturn sweep of the top two spots, with Suzanne Sonye in second. Another Saturn rider, Ina Teutenberg, was fourth with Rebecca Conzelman of the regional Talgoamerica.com sandwiched in third.

The men's race featured a large loop of 93 miles, followed by 14 laps of a 3.5-mile circuit in the center of Danbury. Despite having only five riders on its roster, compared to eight for rival Mercury-Viatel, Saturn was able to counterattack any early moves and then waited for the right moment to make its own attack. Ten intermediate sprints saw early breakaways come and go, none gaining enough time to be a threat to the major teams in the race. "We were just sort of noodling around and then with about 15 kilometers left (on the big loop), I attacked and Chris came with me," said Klasna. "We worked really well together."

Klasna's move coincided with the most difficult climbs of the day, making it even more difficult for the other teams to respond. The two had a little over a minute (1:10) advantage when they entered the finishing circuit, and then increased that lead to over two minutes. Meanwhile Wohlberg and Tim Johnson -- the only two Saturn riders left in the second group -- fought off any desperate attacks by other teams trying to close the gap to the two leaders. Wohlberg took advantage of the fatigue of the chasing teams to sneak away and came across the line alone for third place while Johnson was 14th.
