IMBA Leads Successful British Columbia Mountain Bike Access Summit

British Columbia mountain bikers gathered in Squamish, BC, May 12-13 for the first-ever British Columbia Mountain Bike Access Summit, presented by the International Mountain Bicycling Association, Cycling BC and Shimano Canada.

The goal of the summit was to share and implement strategies to improve mountain bike access throughout the province. The weekend also included social events and plenty of sweet riding. The summit was part of IMBA's ongoing work to support and enhance mountain bike access in Canada.

Attendees shared strategies on how to establish and manage mountain bike clubs, interact with the media and work with land managers to improve trail access. The summit will help inspire the formation of new clubs and the development of new trails province-wide.

Presentations were made by land managers from BC Parks and the BC Ministry of Forests. Government officials from the Greater Vancouver Regional District attended to learn how to enhance recreational opportunities in their communities.

The summit attracted members of more than 20 bicycle clubs, including the Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association, Tricities Off-Road Cycling Coalition, North Shore Mountain Bike Association, South Island Mountain Bike Society and Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association.

"In one day, I learned more about land access issues and liability than all the previous events I have been involved in combined! Truly a great success from my perspective," said Richard Belson of Norco Bikes – a leading Canadian bicycle distributor.

The conference was hosted by the Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association and was supported by the Howe Sound Inn & Brewing Company, Norco Bikes, the Test of Metal mountain bike race and Powerbar.

Saturn Sweeps U.S. Time Trial Nationals

REDDING, Calif. (May 24, 2001) - Trent Klasna (Pine Valley, Calif.) and Kimberley Bruckner (Boulder, Colo.) seem unstoppable as they continue to rack up wins for the Saturn Cycling Team. No performance by the duo has been as impressive, however, as their sweep of the time trials at the U.S. Cycling Federation's (USCF) National Elite Road Cycling Championships, May 24.

The two came into the event hoping to take the national titles from Navigators' Adham Sbeih (Granite Bay, La.) and Mari Holden (Colorado Springs, Colo.) but knew it would be a tough fight to the finish.

"Last night the Saturn team showed me a national champion's jersey that they had printed up," Bruckner said. "And at first I thought, oh no. But it showed that somebody believed I could win."

The Boulder, Colo. resident had to wait until Holden, the last rider and defending champion, crossed the finish line to find out how she stacked up against the Olympic silver medalist. Even after Bruckner had posted a 47 minute, 33.24 second ride, she still wasn't convinced that she had done well enough to win.

"It was really hot," Bruckner said. "There were a lot of false flats and I didn't feel that well. But when I hit the turnaround I was catching my two-minute person and then on the way back I was flying."

When all was said and done, Bruckner captured the national championship by finishing almost 40 seconds faster than the second-place Holden. Pam Schuster (Woodland Hills, Calif.) was third.

As if to prove that Bruckner couldn't out-do him at the biggest event of the season, Klasna pitted himself against a tough field of riders and determined to win.

"The girls are always putting the pressure on us," Klasna said of his female Saturn teammates. "You definitely have to give her (Bruckner) a hand because neither one of us was expected to win."

Klasna knew he had the potential and experience to win the race, but had to race against the likes of last year's winner Sbeih, Mercury's Scott Moninger (Boulder, Colo.) and John Lieswyn (Asheville, N.C.). They all fell short of Klasna, who defeated Sbeih by more than a minute and eight seconds.

The second-place Sbeih had hoped to retain his title, but knew that he'd been beat by a strong Klasna.

"It was a hot day and Trent (Klasna) had a much better ride," Sbeih said. "I did what I could and tried to take care of the details but I just couldn't get it done. So I'm bummed I didn't win but I gave my best. Trent was the better person today."

"I just went out there and did what I had to do," said Klasna, who holds the 1994 national title in the criterium. "The course was difficult. There was a headwind going out and it was definitely hard. You won the race on the way out."

The action continues Saturday, May 26 with the USCF National Elite Road Cycling Championships road race.
