The young sprinter from Lotto-Dstny, Arnaud de Lie, took his second win of the season at the finish line of the first stage of Etoile de Bessèges in France. The Belgian held on as Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) attacked on the finishing hill and nipped him on the sprint. Benoît Cosnefroy (AG2R Citroën Team) was third, finishing in the same time.
Étoile de Bessèges started with a mostly flat stage ending with a ramp in the finishing km, facilitating the punchy sprint finish.
The first breakaway group of the day saw Ayco Bastiaens (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and 2 others gain over 5 minutes with Bastiaens taking enough points to be the first leader of the mountain's classification. Heavy crosswinds and some strategic planning eventually saw the trio back in the bunch before it began the splitting into groups with about 70 kilometres to go.
The 2nd group was able to catch the 1st one who had around 35 riders, specially due to the work of Alpecin-Deceuninck, Arkéa-Samsic and Cofidis teams close to the final 10 kilometres of the race.
Arnaud de Lie will wear the leaders jersey for tomorrow's 170 km rolling stage from Bagard to Aubais.
Hugo Houle (Israel - Premier Tech) was top Canadian on the stage finishing 28th at 15s back.
Guillaume Boivin (Israel - Premier Tech) finished 93rd at 1:26.
Michael Leonard, making his debut with INEOS Grenadiers, finished 125th at 8:24.
