Report From Bastion Square Criterium

Steve Lund (International Cycling Coaches) was the announcer for the Bastion Square Criterium, and has sent in a race report.

The women's crit was Clare HP (Hall-Patch). She attacked super hard from the word go, Marni P(razsky), Erica D(rew) and Mel McQ(uaid) chased, Mel and Marni caught her after about 15 laps, but it was Clare that did the best part of the work to eventually lap the pack which never managed to get a real chase organized. Alison (Sydor) did a good job of setting tempo when ever someone would attack, she'd let them sit 20 meters in front of the pack until they were cooked. In the end Alison and Gina Grain got a bit off the front, but it was just for 4th and 5th. Mel took the sprint, then Clare and Marni.

In the guy's race almost everybody was watching Roland (Green), who mentioned to me the day before that he was only going to work as hard as he had to on Sunday (NORBA this week). There were lots of early attacks that stretched out the front of the pack, Roland finally responded and ended up in a group of 5 with Cam Evans and Svein who started the break as well as Sam Whittingham and Matt Decore. They worked well, and lapped the pack with Cam being especially aggressive. The pack was told to sprint with 3 to go and there was a crash that took down Svein and slowed both Cam and Matt. Cam and Svein were the last to the line of this group in an incredibly close sprint (5 minutes of photo finish analyzing later) Svein took 4th by less than 1/100 of a second (about a mm). Matt was in the middle of it all and cruised across in 3rd. Roland attacked on the uphill start finish on the bell, and managed to get a gap on Sam which he held to the finish.

Roland and Alison both took home new Lazy Boy recliners, thanks to Bernie Willock, (who rode a great race in support of brother Martin who finished 2nd in the cat 4/Master race) for top overall finishes on the weekend.

Thanks to everyone who suggested that I would make a better announcer/analyst than Curt Harnett, but I don't think I have the hair for TV.


Montreal World Cup

The Montreal Women's World Cup starts tomorrow evening with the Critérium du Centre Ville de Montréal. We will begin our coverage live tomorrow from Montreal at approximately 6:00 pm EDT for the crit.

Friday is a rest/prep day for the big event on Saturday - the World Cup on the legendary Mont Royal circuit. The race begins at 11:30 am EDT and we will begin our coverage approximately one hour before that. During the race we will be providing lap-by-lap reports, to be followed by post race interviews and photos.
