For the fifth time at his inaugural Giro d'Italia, Canada's Derek Gee (Israel Premier Tech) has finished in the top-5 on a stage, with his fourth place on the mountainous Stage 18, on Thursday. Gee has now been in breakaways on six of the 18 stages - more than a third of the non-time trial stages - with three second places and two fourths.
The 161 kilometre stage took the riders from Oderzo to a mountain top finish at Val di Zoldo. After a series of attacks, the beginnings of what would be the winning break formed around Gee, his team mate Marco Frigo, eventual stage winner Filippo Zana (Jayco AlUla) and Aurelien Paret-Peintre (AG2R Citroen) on the first major climb of the day, the Passo del Crosetto. Warren Barguil (Arkea Samsic) and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) would join them to make up the core of the break that would stay away to the finish line.
Gee was allowed to collect the maximum Intermediate Sprint points that would solidify his hold on second place in the Points competition (although still a distant 75 points behind leader Jonathan Milan of Bahrain-Victorious), and Pinot gobbled up the top points on each KoM climb to take over the KoM Jersey at the end of the day, with Gee moving up to fifth in the standings from ninth.
Gee was the last to get dropped on the final climb by Zana and Pinot, with Zana outsprinting Pinot for the stage win. Gee was overtaken by Barguil for third in the final few kilometres. Gee jumped from 30th to 24th in the overall standings.
"I was just happy to be up there," said Gee. "My legs have been hurting bad for a couple of days, but I think we really took this race, we attacked it hard. Marco had great legs, and from the first climb the guys were up there attacking, so I think we raced really well. We did everything we could. I think [today] was the last opportunity [for a break] because tomorrow I just want to survive and make it to Rome. No win, but I'm pretty happy."
In the GC race, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) took the race to Pink Jersey holder Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) and Joao Almeida (UAE Emirates) on the final climb. Roglic was able to drop Almeida to move into second overall, but Thomas rode Roglic's wheel to the line, and continues to hold the Pink Jersey with a 29 second advantage.
