On Sunday May 28th, Olivia Baril won GP Ciudad de Eibar (in Spain) for the second year in a row!
The Canadian Olivia Baril (UAE DT) won the GP Ciudad de Eibar, a 112 km classic with the start and finish in Eibar, beating the Spaniard Sheyla Gutierrez (Movistar Team) in the sprint. The Ukrainian Yuliia Biriukova (UAE DT) launched the sprint against Baril and still managed to hold on for third.
The race day started with several attempts but none of them were able to form the escape of the day. With 58km to go, Pauline Allin (Cynisca Cycling), Biriukova and Sophia Zwann (UAE DT), Ana Magalhães (Bizkaia-Durango), Susana Perez (Cantabria Deporte Rio-Miera), Lina Hernandéz (Colombia Pacto Por el Deporte-GW Shimano ), Isabel Martin (Eneicat-CM Team-Seguros Deportivos), Nadia Quagliotto (Laboral Kutxa Fundacion Euskadi), Miryan Nuñez (Massi Tactic Women's Team), Lourdes Oyarbide (Movistar Team), Maeva Squiban (Stade Rochelais Charente Maritime) and Karolina Perekitko (Team Groupe Abadie) jumped out of the peloton and soon had a gap at the front of the race.
With 46km to go, the lead group was reeled in by the peloton. A few kilometres later, Ana Sanabria and Paula Carrasco (Colombia Pacto Por el Deporte-GW Shimano), Ségolène Thomas (Grand-EST Komugi La Fabrique) and Patricia Ortega (Massi Tactic Women’s Team) left the peloton and opened a gap. 30km from the finish line, the front four were brought back to the peloton.
17 km from the finish line, the riders hit the last climb of the day, Alto San Miguel, 5.4km at 4.5%. By the top of the climb, Debora Silvestri, Yurani Blanco and Usoa Ostolaza (Laboral Kutxa Fundacion Euskadi), Natalie Grinczer and Lotte Claes (Stade Rochelais Charente Maritime), Emilie Fortin (Cynisca Cycling), Jessenia Meneses (Colombia Pacto Por el Deporte-GW Shimano) , Gutierrez, Biriukova and Baril where away.
10km from the finish line, Silvestri attacked on the descent and went clear. 1km later, Ostolaza crashed and the Spaniard lost her chance of fighting for the race win.
At 1.8 km from the finish line, Silvestri was caught by the chase group of 8. In the last metres, Baril launched her sprint with Gutierrez on her wheel. but the Spaniard was unable to pass Baril, who took her first victory of the season. Biriukova still managed to be third.
