July 11/23 21:24 pm - Canadian Champion Ethan Powell Wins Opening Stage of Tour de l'Abitibi

Recently crowned Canadian Junior road champion Ethan Powell (Team Canada) won the opening stage of Tour de l'Abitibi in a bunch sprint on Tuesday evening, donning the Brown Jersey of race leader. Paul Picard (France) was second on the stage and Satoaki Nagashima (Japan) third. Powell also holds the Points (Orange) and Climber (Polka Dot) jerseys, while Jonathan Hinse (Team Canada) will wear the Blue Jersey as Best First Year Rider. Team Canada also leads the Team Classification.
The riders covered 116.7 kilometres between Val-d'Or and Amos, passing through Barraute. Nervous conditions in the peloton led to several crashes as constant attacks took place in the opening kilometres. Hinse was a member of several break attempts, scoring points in intermediate sprints and a time bonus that put him third in the general classification, one second ahead of Nagashima, and one second behind Picard, who is four seconds behind Powell, after all the time bonuses were calculated.
