Mercury Report
Mercury-Viatel's Leon Van Bon scored the 42nd victory of the season by winning the First Union Invitational held in Lancaster, PA.
The 91 mile event held in the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, saw the Dutchman win with a great team effort. Teammate Baden Cooke was 5th as 5 riders went clear with 2 laps to go. The group contained the strongest riders in the race. Former winners Jacob Piil and Trent Klasna joined George Hincapie in the decisive move.
It was an attack by Piil that split a group of 25 riders that had escaped with 4 laps to go. 7 members of the Mercury-Viatel team made the break. In fact, all of the strong teams had their strongman in the group. Following Piil was Cooke. The duo put 30 seconds into the remaining group until a counter went with Hincapie, Klasna and Van Bon.
With his second win this week, Killer "V'" an Bon is certainly on form. But it was good teamwork with Cooke that proved to be the difference today.
The win was a little bit of revenge for Van Bon, who in April lost to Hincapie by centimeters in a sprint finish at Ghent-Wevelgem. "It's better to win from him than lose from him," said Van Bon.
