Please note that Friday June 15 is the early bird deadline for registration in the 2001 Canada Cup downhill and dual events at Poley Mountain, Sussex, NB. Registration after Friday will mean a $10 late fee for these events. The Velo NB / NB Tel Series cross country deadline has been extended to Wednesday, June 20, after which there will also be a $10 late fee." Bianchi Returns to Canada

Roces Canada Ltd. is very pleased to announce the acquisition of exclusive Canadian distribution for Bianchi Bicycles. Roces is well known as a distributor for its own brand of inline skates, in addition to a well established cross country ski program. The CCA Announces a new VP Marketing and Communications

Ottawa, ON - The Canadian Cycling Association is pleased to announce that Michel DuPaul has been appointed as Vice-President Marketing.

Mr. DuPal has his Financial Planning diploma, as well as an MBA. His bachelor degree included a Major in financial management with a Minor in recreology. He is presently the Director of Business Development of the Caisse Populaire Desjardins in Joliette, Québec. Mr. DuPaul's cycling background includes the Director General of the Québec Cycling Federation from 1977 to 1984.

Mr. DuPaul assumes his duties immediately and will be a very strong additon to the CCA. We look forward to working with him.


L'ACC annonce un nouveau VP Marketing et Communications

Ottawa, ON - L'Association cycliste canadienne a le plaisir d'annoncer que M. Michel DuPaul a été nommé le nouveau Vice-Président de Marketing et Communications.

Mr. DuPaul a une Maîtrise en Administration (MBA). Il est présentement le Directeur au Développement des Affaires à la Caisse Populaire Desjardins à Joliette, Québec. M. DuPaul a déja occupé le poste de Directeur Général de la Fédération québecoise des sports cyclistes de 1977 à 1984, en plus d'être Vice-Président Affaire Corporatif de l'ACC.

L'arrivée de M. DuPaul à l'ACC aura un impact très signicatif à raison de ses connaissances dans le milieu des affaires. Il commence ses fonctions dès maintenant.


Intersports Race Report - Philadelphia World Cup

The month of June was planned to be a big one for the Intersports Cycling Team. With 2 World Cups and the HP Women's Challenge, the season's 3 major objectives all fell within a 4 week span. Now that the First Union Liberty Classic in Philadelphia is complete, it is clear that the team's preparations have gone well. Under sunny skies and in 80 degree temperatures, Intersports' Sandy Espeseth finished a stellar 4th place behind 3 of the world's fastest sprinting sensations in Philly. The Saturn's duo of Petra Rossner and Anna Millward completed Rossner's quintet of wins in the Liberty Classic while Vlaandeeren's Debby Mansveld nipped Espeseth at the line for the final podium spot. The 5 laps of the Liberty Classic played out in typical fashion as faithful Saturn team riders fended off the attacks of the AutoTrader and Acca Due squads. Knowing that a bunch finish was in the cards, Intersports intelligently stayed out of the mix until the final lap when Jessica Phillips and Catherine Marsal assured a high tempo over the final 10 kilometres. In the final 2 kilometres, Erin Carter and Anne Samplonius were instrumental in assuring Espeseth's good position on the Saturn train, while still also finishing a respectable 14th and 15th. Combined the Intersports team finished 2nd overall in the team competition making for a healthy prize split.

Next stop for the Intersports Cycling Team is the all important HP Women's Challenge where climbing ace Caroline Alexander will rejoin the team and a new secret weapon will be rolled out. Stay tuned!!!

A little update on the weekend...

Yes, Saturn did a great job at the NY City Women's Challenge, but Stephanie Hannos was left out of their report. Stephanie won the field sprint for 6th position.

Also, at the Syracuse crit the next day . . . Stephanie Hannos lapped the field for first and Julia Farrell was fourth.

Also, while your results listing of Philly does note that Andrea Hannos and Darnelle Moore riding for Verizon Wireless did finish, a littlecommentary is in order...

They helped the team to finish as the only team with all 6 riders with the same time and 5 riders in the top 40 (no other team with more then 3).

While mothers Karen Spore and Susan Palmer-Komar were also in the main field, they lost the mom challenge to Paula McNamara in 9th with 2 kids.. :)


L'étape à Salois et la victoire finale à Gilbert au Grand Prix cycliste de Charlevoix

Charlevoix, Québec - 10 juin 2001. Martin Gilbert de l'équipe cycliste Volkswagen - Les Ailes a remporté dimanche le Grand Prix cycliste de Charlevoix, tandis que son coéquipier Marc-André Salois est monté sur la plus haute marche du podium de cette dernière étape.

Gilbert a animé la course lorsqu'il s'est échappé du peloton au vingtième kilomètre. La cavale en solitaire de l'athlète de Châteauguay s'est terminée avec 25 kilomètres à faire lorsque son coéquipier Marc-André Salois l'a rejoint. Quelques instants plus tard, c'était au tour de Alexandre Cloutier, également membre de Volkswagen - Les Ailes, de rattraper le duo.

" C'est ma première victoire cette saison ", a indiqué Salois très heureux. " Avant l'arrivée, nous avons discuté et ils (Martin Gilbert et Alexandre Cloutier) ont décidé de me laisser l'étape, étant donné que Alexandre avait déjà une victoire dans le Grand Prix et que la première place de Martin au général était assurée. "

Vainqueur au classement général, Martin Gilbert a vanté le travail de son équipe : " Tout le monde a sa victoire et ça, c'est plaisant ! a-t-il expliqué. J'ai commencé à manquer d'énergie à la fin, mais nous avons réussi à demeurer ensemble jusqu'à la ligne d'arrivée. "

Pour sa part, Alexandre Cloutier semblait surpris de sa prestation : " Je ne croyais pas que ça se passerait si bien. Je ne suis pas un bon grimpeur, mais le fait d'avoir rattrapé les gars sur ce parcours côteux, c'est un point positif pour moi. "

Au classement général final, les cyclistes de Volkswagen - Les Ailes monopolisent les cinq premières places. Martin Gilbert termine premier, suivi dans l'ordre de Alexandre Cloutier, Marc-André Salois, François Parisien et Bruno Langlois.

Mentionnons en terminant que Martin Nuckle, quatrième la veille au classement général, a été victime d'une crevaison lors de cette étape de 100 kilomètres.
