February 3/24 5:16 am - France Takes Opening CX Worlds Win, Carrier 16th

Rafaelle Carrier was the top Canadian finisher in the opening individual race of the Cyclo-cross World Championships, in Tabor, Czechia, finishing 16th as a first year Junior. Célia Gery of France took the title in a very hard three-way battle.

The rolling 3.45 kilometre circuit frozen overnight, but by the time the Junior women started it was a sticky, muddy, mess, which could be seen in the 12-plus minute laps, resulting in a race of only three laps. By the third lap, many riders were just slogging to finish the race.
Viktória Chladonová (Czechia) was the early leader, but Gery and Cat Ferguson (Great Britain) had joined her by the end of the first lap, the rest of the race was between these three, swapping the lead regularly as one or the other bobbled. In the final half lap, Gery took advantage of a slight mistake by Ferguson to take the lead, and the Brit could not close the gap. Géry came into the race as one of the big favourites, after three World Cup wins this season.
Carrier had a strong start, riding top-10 for the first lap. She faded to 20th by the end of the opening lap, but recovered to ride as high as 14th in a five-way battle for 13th. Lily Marois was 31st, Aislin Hallahan 44th, Nico Knoll 46th and Dorothee Perron 51st,
