Mercury Team Report

An American rider has surprised a lot of people by winning the long (45km) individual time trial in the Criterium du Dauphiné Libéré in France. Jonathan Vaughters, who previously rode under John Wordin's management in 1997, has not won a race since he joined Crédit Agricole in 2000. His last showing was in the Route du Sud in 1999. He gave an impressive showing between Beaumes-de-Venise and Valreas in the Vaucluse area, relatively close to Mont Ventoux where Vaughters also won the time trial in the 1999 Dauphiné. This looks like it's his favorite race.

But is he able to win it? "I'm afraid of Pavel Tonkov, Benoit Salmon and the Euskaltel riders", Vaughters declared. Tonkov was named first. Probably because he showed his strength on the Ventoux on Wednesday. He also did well in the time trial. Mercury-Viatel's Russian leader looked pretty happy with his ride, even if he didn't comment much on the race.

Team directeur Alain Gallopin wasn't as impressed after following him in the team car during the race. Unlike the feelings he had behind Andrei Teteriuk at the Midi Libre three weeks before. The Frenchman nevertheless is happy with his protégé's result. Tonkov now stands 5th on GC. That's perfect before the high mountain stages to come. Stage 5 includes the terrifying Galibier. This mountain stage almost was cancelled due to the snow but it has been deemed OK, the race will not miss it. The race initially looked to be dominated by Cofidis, but now there are many teams that can focus on the overall win. Cofidis of course with the new yellow jersey David Millar, Crédit Agricole with Jonathan Vaughters, Festina with Christophe Moreau, Ag2r with Benoît Salmon and of course Mercury-Viatel with Pavel Tonkov. "It's going to be an interesting battle", Gallopin stated.


CCA DH Camp

The Canadian Cycling Association is organizing a mountain bike training camp from June 30 - July 6, ending just before the Grouse Mountain World Cup. This camp will be led by Yury Kashirin, National Team Coach, who will be assisted by Michel Leblanc, Quebec Provincial Coach. This camp will be open to 20 athletes. The cost of this camp will be $300 and will include all accommodations at the University of Victoria, three meals per day, expert coaching and training education. Athletes will receive transport from the Victoria airport or ferry to the training center. There will also be the opportunity for 10-15 athletes to receive transportation to Grouse Mountain Cup and receive free lodging with a host family. Biker Cross

Veltec Cycles Canada and Schwinn Bicycles are excited to announce the SCHWINN/TOYOTA BIKER-CROSS, an invitational Mountain Bike event to be held on August 22, 2001 at Le Relais Ski Resort 15, Lac-Beauport, Quebec.

The race layout will be similar to the now popular multiple rider format seen in similar sports such as snowboarding‚s boarder-cross and the very successful variation of the Winter X-Games „Biker-X‰ which debuted the 6-rider format on snow. The event itself will feature multiple sequential heats of riders as they sprint their way down a sweeping and jump filled „slalom-style‰ course in hopes of making it to the finish line in a position that will allow them to advance to the next round of competition. The contest promises to be action filled with tons of spectacular jumping and incredible close contact racing.

The multiple rider format of the SCHWINN/TOYOTA BIKER-CROSS is now in high demand by sponsors and is currently the most viewer friendly of the mountain bike disciplines. This new race format captures the high speeds seen in Downhill racing and combines them with the close rider proximity and contact of Dual Slalom in an easy to view, short, tight course.

Event management for the SCHWINN/TOYOTA BIKER-CROSS will be provided by GESTEV INC., a Quebec based event Management Company known around the word for its successful work with the TISSOT/UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.

Filmed and produced for a national audience, the SCHWINN/TOYOTA BIKER-CROSS will have prime time airings on TSN, RDS, OLN and WTSN (the Women‚s Sports Network) with an original television airing date of October 2001.

There will be men and women‚s specific events, both of which will be turned into exciting television programs for distribution in Canada. A French specific show will also be produced for RDS, the French sports television network.

Competitors will be fighting for a $10,000 prize purse to be distributed between the Biker-Cross and late afternoon SCHWINN/TOYOTA BIG AIR contest.
