We are very sorry to report that a long time member of the Canadian cycling community, Peter McCaffery, passed away on Sunday in his home of Nanaimo, BC, after a battle with cancer, at the age of 84. For the past 15 years, Peter has been known as the founder of the Mid Island Velo Association and its former President, as well as a member of Slowspokes Nanaimo. But prior to his retirement on the Island (where he moved from Ontario), Peter was the driving force behind the Midweek Club in Mississauga. And before that, he was a national level commissaire (which is where I first got to know him in the 1980s). And before that ... you get the picture.

Peter didn't just head organizations, he got his hands dirty every day - running races, timing, setting up and tearing down courses, and encouraging newcomers to enter the sport. His energy and enthusiasm was inexhaustible - when he was hit by a BC Hydro truck some years ago and almost died, he had to be basically tied down while he healed. He was also endlessly fascinated by bike technology - some it just plain weird. Check out his FaceBook page on his efforts to add mudguards to his carbon Orbea road bike, when Orbea told him it wasn't possible! And the video of him on his recumbent with his dog in basket....

Our condolences to Peter's family and friends, who were legion.
