June 19/01 9:20 am - GP de Beauce: Stage 2 Reports and Early Results

Reports from Stage 2 - Grand Prix Cyclist Poste Canada de Beauce:
June 19: Charny - Beauceville, 168.2 km

11am - Stage 2 started at 10:30 am on the south shore of Quebec City in Charny . With the exception of one small section, the course will follow the Chaudière river south into the Beauce region and finish in Beauceville, just north of St-Georges. The 168.2 km is rolling and winding. The first quarter of the course is a gradual elevation increase, then the elevation goes up to 600 metres quickly and the 'rollers' get bigger.

Before today's start it was raining heavily and then quit just as the racers were called to the line.

At the 7km mark, Jason Crookham (Sympatico.ca) launched an attack and gained a 40 second gap on the pack. Then Andrew Pinfold (Team Canada) bridged up and joined him. At this point the rain began again, heavily.

At the 15 km point the two have 1:05 on the pack (which is not looking too interested) and a lone rider from Saint-Quentin Oktos is attempting a bridge.


Noon

At the 30 km point the gap for Pinfold and Crookham was 3:26 and increasing. The Saint-Quentin Oktos rider had abandonned his attempt and had settled back into the pack, which had MROZ at the front, but they were not chasing.

The rain has let up and is now just a drizzle.

At 42 km the gap from break to peloton was 4:10. Mroz was still at the front, setting tempo but still not chasing.

A group of riders at the back of the peloton went down at a railway crossing, so the pack slowed down a bit to allow tham to get back on.

55 km and the gap is 4:25

1:20pm -

• 62 km - climbing starts. Gap has dropped to 2:10 and the sun has come out.

• 84km. Crookham is on his own. Gap has dropped to 1:30 and Pinfold is 1 minute in front of the peloton.

• 90 km - Crookham is caught by the peloton.

•91 km - Cantina Tollo rider Emmanuele Negrini has launched and attack and has a 22 second gap.

2:20pm

• 50 km to go - Negrini still away w/ a 56 second gap. the terrain is now rolling and he is riding well. It is warming up considerabley. Hooker of (Team Canada) attempted a bridge, but was not able to .

• 46 km to go - Negrini was caught at the feed zone. Svein Tuft (Team Canada) launched an attack just as they caught Negrini and has 45 seconds on the peloton.

• 35 km to go - Tuft has 1:15. The peloton is beginning to come to life. Mapei launched an attack which MROZ countered and brought back quickly.

2:50pm

• 25 km to go and Tuft has been caught and the peloton is all back together.

• 12 km to go. Andy Capelle (Saint-Quentin Oktos) has just launched an attack and has a gap is 15 seconds.
