HP Women's Challenge

The Saturn Team and Canadian rider Lyne Bessette emerged victorious once again when Bessette took first place in Stage 11 of the 18th Annual HP Women's Challenge, finishing in 23 minutes and 13 seconds. Despite a sore hip, Jeannie Longo of the Office Depot Team came in with the second best time and Katrina Berger of the AutoTrader.com Team took third place in the time trial stage.

Today's time trial started at the end of the race roster with the lowest scoring rider beginning first and working backwards with the highest scoring riders starting last. Longo held the fastest time and it looked like she was going to take first in the stage until Bessette, the current race leader and the last rider in the time trial to start, came in 24 seconds faster.

Under hot sun, no shade and temperatures in the high-90s, the riders started out on the 10-mile course on flat road before quickly reaching the 500-foot climb up Old Freeze Out Hill which zigzagged all of the way up and down. The course then flattened out again with the riders finishing the last two kilometers in a lap around the Firebird Race Track. The Saturn Team again showed a strong presence up on the podium with three riders placing in the top ten, followed by the German National Team who had two riders in the top ten.

Today's stage win by Bessette's is her third which has arguably cemented her first place lead overall but Longo was able to move up one notch to fifth from sixth place by taking second in Stage 11.

"After placing second in the first stage, I knew I could do pretty well. I'm very excited about winning three stages so far as it was a goal for me this year," said Saturn's Lyne Bessette after her first place win in Stage 11. Comment from Bessette on Saturn's first place team standing "Winning this year's HP Women's Challenge was a goal for me and the entire team."

Comment from Jeannie Longo of Office Depot on placing second today, "My performance was good but not wonderful as I have been having
problems with my left hip all week due to sciatica."
