NORBA #2 Canadians Dominant in West Virginia

Snowshoe, West Virginia., 22 June 2001 - Canadian mountain bikers dominated an international field in round two of the Chevy Trucks National Off-Road Bicycling Association National Championships Mountain Bike Series, 22 June.

The current world cup leader, Canadian Roland Green (Trek Volkswagen), Victoria, BC, powered through wet mud and over slippery tree roots to a convincing win in the 22-mile men's race, which included more than 3200 feet of climbing.

Green finished 1 minute, 33 seconds clear of second placed Paul Rowney (Pear Izumi), Australia, with Canada's Ryder Hesjedahl (Subaru Gary Fisher), Victoria, BC, third at 3 minutes, 32 seconds.

Green now leads the Chevy Trucks NORBA National Championships Mountain Bike Series, with Canadians Hesjedahl and Seamus McGrath (Haro/Lee Dungarees), Millgrove, ON, second and third overall, respectively.

Four more Canadian riders occupied top ten places in today's race, with Chad Miles (Roach) of Whistler, BC, fourth at 5 minutesGeoff Kabush, Victoria, BC, fifth at 5:54Seamus McGrath sixth at 6:40 and Andreas Hestler (Rocky Mountain), North Vancouver, BC, eighth at 8:21.

In the 16.5-mile women's race, Chrissy Redden (Subaru Gary Fisher), Campbellville, ON, finished second, at 2:44, after losing contact with her team-mate Mary Grigson (Subaru Gary Fisher) of Australia when climbing a long ascent on the second of three laps.

"After separating my shoulder and having some tough races on the world cup circuit, I had a poor race at round one (of the Chevy Trucks NORBA series) three weeks ago, but then I went back to Canada and had a really good ride in the Canada Cup at Hardwood Hills and I felt really good coming into this race."

Roland Green, first place pro men "It was just a matter of keeping your head together, it was a good time - an incredible race course. "I find the NORBA races more relaxed (than the world cup circuit), it's a good feeling coming to race at these events."

Ryder Hesjedahl, third pro men"I've been doing some hard training over the past couple of weeks, building up for what's ahead. My legs didn't feel that excited today, and based on that I'm happy with third."
