June 12/25 17:43 pm - New Yellow Jersey After Stage 2 at Tour de Beauce

Posted by Editoress on 06/12/25

Team Skyline took a second straight win on Thursday at the Tour de Beauce, with Conn McDunphy winning after an impressive solo effort of over 70 kilometres in the 164 kilometre stage that began and ended at Saint-Odilon-de-Cranbourne. Quebecer Joël Plamondon (Marni N'Side) finished third on the stage and moved up to second overall, behind new leader Mattia Gaffuri (Swatt Club). Plamondon also donned the Points Jersey, with his teammate Jerome Gauthier retaining the Best Young Rider Jersey.

The race was very aggressive through the first two hours of racing, with attack after attack getting reeled in. Finally, seven riders broke free - McDunphy, Stephen Bassett (Project Echelon), James Gardner (MitoQ - NZ Cycling Project), Alexis Bouchard (Team Mami N'SIDE), Carl Truffer (Les Regis), Nathan Pruner (TaG Cycling) and Cooper Langard (Manteo Racing).

The group was ahead by over two minutes at the Massif KoM climb, but McDunphy attacked on his own over the climb, quickly building a gap on the rest of the break, and eventually gaining over five minutes on the peloton as the rest of the break was gradually reabsorbed. McDunphy is no stranger to Beauce, having won the final stage last year.

"I'm dead! I think I've got a few screws loose in my head from doing this solo," he said through tears after hugging his sports director. McDunphy also gained the KoM Jersey.

McDunphy became the virtual GC leader ahead of his teammmate Sean Christian before the peloton began pulling him back, with the Irishman eventually finishing 1:17 ahead of the split up peloton, which was led in by Wilmar Andres Paredes Zapata (Medellin - EPM) and Plamondon. Christian finished in a second group, a further 11 seconds back, enough to lose the Yellow Jersey. Gaffuri now leads Plamondon by one second, within nine riders within ten seconds of the lead.

Joël Plamondon, sixth on the opening stage, also believed he had taken the lead in the general classification. "Things were going very well. I showed it on the last climb. I wasn't letting anyone get away! This is my first UCI podium. I'm really in shape and I think I can do well in Mégantic," he explained. The 22-year-old has other ambitions between now and Sunday. "A podium in the general classification is possible," said the cyclist, who is benefiting from the help of his brother Robin within the team.

However, the Yellow Jersey could quite easily change hands after Friday's queen stage. The cyclists will set off from Lac-Mégantic for a 169-kilometer circuit leading to the final six kilometre climb up to the Mont-Mégantic Observatory, located atop the highest paved road in Quebec.

Last year, New Zealander Josh Burnett took a giant step toward overall victory at the top of the mountain.
