Once again, the Mont Megantic stage proved to be decisive at Tour de Beauce, with Colombia's Diego Andres Camargo of Team Medellin winning the stage and taking over the leader's jersey, as well as the Points Jersey. The leader coming into the stage, Mattia Gaffuri (Swatt Club), managed third on the stage and now sits 22 seconds back in second overall, but holds the KoM Jersey, while Joel Plamondon (Team Marni N'SIDE) is the top Canadian in fifth overall, after finishing 17th on the stage; top Canadian for the day was Felix Bouchard (Team Marni N'SIDE) in fourth, one spot ahead of Felix Hamel (Cannondale Echelon p/b 4iiii), while another Quebecer also finished in the top ten of the day - Edward Ouellet (Premier Tech Endo) finished in seventh. Jerome Gauthier (Team Marni N'SIDE) continues to hold the Best Young Rider Jersey.
"I would have liked to do a little better," said Plamondon, "but I put in more effort than expected before the climb. My legs were a little heavy, and I still managed well."
The 169 kilometre third stage starts in Mont Megantic and winds its way to the five kilometre climb up to the Mont Megantic Observatory, the highest paved road in Quebec. Every year it makes a huge impact on the GC, as riders struggle to not lose time on the climb.
This year, there were multiple attacks in the first half of the stage before ten riders finally broke away with 70 kilometres remaining. Mexico's Ulises Alfredo Castillo (Olinka - Specialized) then attacked out of the break, but was reeled in at the start of the final climb, leaving the top climbers to battle it out. Gaffuri, the Yellow Jersey, set the tempo in the early part of the climb, but could not match the pace of Camargo or Owen Cole (Winston Salem), who finished two seconds behind the winner.
On Saturday, the riders head to Quebec City for the penultimate stage, a 70 kilometre circuit race.
