The Canadian Road Nationals concluded on Monday with the Criterium competition for Under-17 / Junior women and men, as well as Under-23 / Elite women and men. Quebec riders took all four titles, with three of the races coming down to field sprints.
In the combined U17/Junior races, the women's title went to Abigael Fortier (Équipe du Québec), who beat teammate Elodie Malois and Team Ontario's Elly Moore in the 30 minute plus three laps event. The U17/Junior men's race was the only one to not finish in a field sprint, with five riders breaking away roughly two-thirds of the way through the 45 minute (plus three laps) race. Gabriel Tilli (Équipe du Québec) took the title, holding off Brody Mann (Ignite Junior Cycling) and Monty Rigby (PNW Racing).
The Elite races were both 60 minutes plus three laps. The women's race saw the pink jerseys of EF Education Oatley closely monitoring the front of the peloton, and they quickly shut down any breakaway attempts. Alison Jackson, who had won the Elite road national title with a remarkable 85 kilometre solo ride the previous day, led out her teammate and designated sprinter Alexandra Volstad (the Under-23 road champion), but the team was denied a second title when sprint specialist Josephine Peloquin (LA Sweat) came past to win by a bike length. Laury Milette (KDM Cycling Pack) took third.
The Elite men's race saw multiple breakaways, but the high pace meant nothing could stick. A crash in the final lap thinned the field, but Cannondale Echelon p/b 4iiii appeared to have set up Philippe Jacob perfectly. The team's hopes were dashed when Olympian Mathias Guillemette (Tudor Pro Cycling), a track specialist who has moved to the road, came charging through in the final metres to win by a quarter of a wheel with a bike throw. Carl Truffer (Les Régis pb Groupe auto Ami Juniors) took third.
