Stage 5 of the Tour de l'Abitibi saw the overall lead changes hands once again on Friday, with Gabin Gicquel of France winning both the 140 kilometre stage between Senneterre and Val d'Or, and also taking the race leader's jersey.
Despite multiple breakaway attempts, it wasn't until 111 kilometres into the stage that a group of eight riders was able to successfully stay away. The group included Gicquel, Simon Defrance (France), Yuki Inoue (Japan), Shawn Rheault (Alliance Expertismed), Maddox Simmons (USA), Cedric Brouillard (Equipe du Quebec), Cedric Fiset (EC Subway) and Ronan Mantle (Liftow - KW Cycling Academy). The group gained a minute by the 123 kilometre mark, when Defrance attacked. He was brought back, but his teammate Gicquel successfully counterattacked, pulling away to win solo by 45 seconds. Defrance took second, five seconds ahead of Inoue.
Gicquel leads the overall race by 1:21, ahead of Team Canada's Maxime Bourassa, with Stage 2 winner Nikolas Milanovic (USA) at 1:26. Gicquel also holds both the Points and Climber jerseys, while Alban Picard (France) remains in the Best Young Rider jersey. Team Canada leads the Team Classification.
