Canadian Olympic track cycling champion Kelsey Mitchell has announced that she is returning to cycling after her successful transition of bobsleigh, which saw her finish 13th in the 2-woman event at the recent Milano-Torino Winter Olympics. However, Mitchell, who won gold in the women's Sprint at the Tokyo Games, will be shifting to a different track discipline as she returns to cycling - BMX racing.
"I was really starting to get stale [of track cycling] by the Paris Games, so I needed to try something different," explained Mitchell. "I tried speedskating and then bobsleigh, and that turned out to be just what I need to reignite my competitive fires."
Mitchell had stated that she always planned to return to cycling, but her plans shifted slightly post-Milano, when she embarked on a second career as an international food and vacation influencer.
"I wanted to do something that combined cycling with the adrenalin rush of bobsleigh. I thought about Downhill, but I'm not so big on tattoos and body piercings, so I went with BMX. The event fits with my strengths for short and explosive events, although I'm still working on the whole jumping thing."
