Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) was crowned the overall winner of the 109th edition of the Giro d'Italia after the final stage, which started and finished in Rome.
Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) raised his arms in victory after numerous disappointments, but the Italian giant settled the score by demonstrating his potential in a hard-fought sprint.
His time of 3:05:51, beat his compatriot Giovanni Leonardo (Polti-Visit Malta) and Frenchman Paul Panhoet (Groupama-FDJ United).
Jonas Vingegaard, in his Giro debut, joins a group of 8 who have won all 3 Grand Tours: Anquetil, Gimondi, Merckx, Hinault, Contador, Nibali, and Froome. He will be aiming for a Giro-Tour double this season at the Tour de France, a feat only achieved by Coppi, Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, Roche, Indurain, Pantani, and Pogacar.
Vingegaard's superiority was reflected in the general classification, finishing more than 5 minutes ahead of the other podium finishers, Austrian Felix Gall (Decathlon) and Australian Jai Hindley, the 2022 Giro winner. The top 10 consisted of Arensman, Derek Gee, Afonso Eulálio, Storer, Piganzoli, Caruso, and the Colombian Egan Bernal.
In the other classifications, the Italian Giulio Ciccone (Lidl Trek) took the blue jersey for the mountains, the most consistent rider was the French sprinter Paul Magnier (Soudal), who scored a hat trick in the sprints; the best young rider, the white jersey, went to the Portuguese Afonso Eulálio, who wore the pink jersey for 8 days; and the best team, without question, was Vingegaard's Visma.
Derek Gee-West (Lidl-Trek) finished 5th overall.
